Is it actually free?
Yes. The free version has everything: unlimited identification, all care reminders, growth logs. It shows occasional ads around the identify flow. A one-time $3.99 purchase removes ads forever. There is no subscription and no other paywall.
Does my photo leave my phone?
No. The identification model runs entirely on your device. Your photos are stored in the app's local storage and are never uploaded — there's no server to upload them to.
How accurate is the identification?
On par with the leading paid apps for common houseplants. More importantly, GreenThumb is honest about uncertainty: every match comes with a confidence score, and when species look alike you'll see the top three candidates instead of one confident guess. We'd rather say "probably" than be wrong.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email, no login. Install it and point it at a plant. Your plants and reminders live on your device.
Does it work offline?
Completely. Identification, care schedules, and reminders all run on-device, so the app works the same in airplane mode as on Wi-Fi.
